Description

With the Garmin Astro 220, Garmin Astro has now introduced the next generation of GPS dog tracking systems designed with hunters and sportsmen in mind. Gone are the days of losing your hunting dog in tall grass or dense cover, you now have the ability to silently keep track of your dog and know exactly what he is doing.

This system is extremely well designed and easy to set-up. It includes a handheld GPS device with a brightly colored screen. The all-weather DC-40 is an integrated GPS transmitter that is specially weighted so that the antenna is always pointing to the sky for optimum signal. It has a top mounted, low profile GPS antenna and a side mounted “whip” antenna. The new design of the dog tracking collar has moved most of the electronics to the bottom of the collar, placing them in front of the dog’s chest. The purpose of this keeps the collar in place, and protects the collar by lowering the chances of impact. The Garmin Astro Collar DC 40 has a separate GPS antenna that is on top of the collar strap, and keeps the antenna below the dog’s head to help avoid direct hits in the field. The DC 40’s “whip” antenna will take all the abuse a dog will give it, this design is more like the traditional telemetry tracking collar. Garmin has increased the range of the DC-40, the new line of sight with it is up to 7 miles depending on the terrain, and this system transmits information by line-of-sight, so it has the longest range on flat, open terrain. You also have the ability to track up to 10 dogs at one time with the Garmin Astro 220. To get started with you system, simply take to Astro outside, turn on the handheld device and transmitter to acquire GPS satellite signals, attach the DC-40 to your dog, and let him loose.

When you dog is out running in the field, the DC-40 will transmit a signal to the handheld device as often as every five seconds. You are able to see where he is and a trail of where he’s been on the Map page of your handheld. You then have the option to switch over to the Dog Tracker page, this gives you the ability to view a compass pointing to your dog’s location and what his current action is whether he’s running, pointing, sitting or treeing quarry. The Garmin 220 also alerting you immediately when your dog goes into point mode.

The Garmin Astro 220 has a feature called the Astro’s Covey Counter. This is a very special feature that allows you to mark the exact spot, time of day and elevation that you found your prey, as well as the number of birds you flushed and took from that specific location. This system also gives you the ability to save other locations such as “lodge” and “truck”, so you can save the location of the places and easily and quickly locate them.

This system isn’t only a dog tracking system, it also comes with all the features of Garmin’s top-line handheld outdoor devices, including an electronic compass, barometric altimeter, celestial information, microSD card slot, area calculator, and rugged, IPX7 waterproof exterior. With optional detailed street maps, you can create a route on roads with exact-turn-by-turn directions.

Due to varying international regulations, the Garmin 220 is only approved to be used in the United States.
